A Day of Linocut at Innerpeffray Library
Sunday 6 September

I’m very pleased to be taking part in this year’s Innerpeffray Festival, the annual Festival of Reading held at the Library of Innerpeffray in rural Perthshire. On Sunday 6 September 2026 I’ll be running a full-day linocut workshop in The Schoolroom, from 10:00am until 4:00pm.

If you don’t know Innerpeffray, it’s a remarkable place — founded in 1680, it was the first free public lending library in Scotland, and the building you visit today dates from 1762. The festival celebrates reading in every form, and each year it takes its theme from the Library’s own exhibition. The 2026 theme is ‘Signs of the Times‘, exploring the use of imagery and symbols in the books of the collection — heraldry, emblems, fortune-telling, fine decorative bindings and the history of printers’ marks.

Printers’ marks, of course, is where I come in. There’s a direct line from those early cut and printed symbols to what we’ll be doing in The Schoolroom, and it’s a lovely setting in which to be making marks of your own.

What the day involves

No experience is needed at all. We’ll cover the fundamentals of relief printing — how to cut, how to ink, how to print — and by the end of the day you’ll have made your own prints, cards and bookmarks to take home. All materials are supplied. Just bring a simple sketch of something you’d like to make, and some enthusiasm.

There’s no café at Innerpeffray, so please bring your own lunch. Tea, coffee and soft drinks are available on site.
