I’m delighted to be one of sixteen printmakers taking part in Lino North, a major exhibition of contemporary linocut opening at The Biscuit Factory in Newcastle upon Tyne on Friday 11 September 2026 and running right through to Sunday 29 November.
Lino North brings together artists working in linocut across Scotland, Wales and the North of England. It’s a rare thing to see this much relief printmaking gathered in one place, and rarer still to see the range of it — everything from bold graphic work to the finest, most delicate cutting. The full line-up is Ade Adesina, Bryan Angus, Laura Boswell, myself, Graham Firth, Eric Gaskell, Fiona Humphrey, Karen Menarry, Joshua Miles, Ingrid Nilsson, Babs Pease, Ian Phillips, Rosanna Reade, Masha Tiplady, Jane Walker and Deb Wing.
What makes this show different is that it doesn’t stop at the walls. Throughout the eleven weeks of the exhibition there’s a programme of artist events in the gallery — each of us takes a turn being there in person to talk about the work, demonstrate cutting and printing, and answer the questions that people always want to ask but rarely get the chance to. If you’ve ever wondered how a linocut actually gets made, this is your opportunity to watch it happen and ask.
There’s also a short film about the exhibition and the printmakers in it, which is well worth five minutes of your time:
